Methodology
What actually determines your moving cost?
Interstate movers price transported weight over distance, then add service at each end, seasonal demand, and anything optional. Our model follows the same structure and publishes every input, so a changed number always has a stated cause.
Read the full pricing methodology or see where these estimates fall short.
- 01DistanceLine-haul rate per hundredweight falls as mileage rises, so cost per mile is highest on short interstate moves.
- 02Shipment sizeHome-size profiles set an assumed weight band. Weight is the multiplier applied to the distance rate.
- 03Move timingA seasonal multiplier is applied only when a month is chosen: peak summer sits about 12% above the off-peak baseline.
- 04Origin and destination laborCrew service at each end is priced separately using a documented per-market labor index, not a single national rate.
- 05Optional servicesPacking, storage in transit, and specialty handling are added only when selected, and are shown as separate components.

How the estimate works
How we calculate moving costs
- 01
Route and distance
City-center coordinates with a published circuity factor produce estimated road miles.
- 02
Shipment size
Your home size maps to an assumed weight band, labelled as an estimating assumption.
- 03
Pricing model
A route-based pricing model applies distance-banded line-haul rates plus origin and destination service.
- 04
Timing and services
Seasonality and any optional services are applied last, each as a separate component.
Example estimate
3-bedroom, Los Angeles, CA → Austin, TX
≈1,420 miles · assumed 8,150 lbs · no packing, off-peak
$5,850–$7,800
- Line haul (weight × distance)
- $5,000
- Origin and destination service
- $1,200
- Transport and fuel
- $550

FAQ
Common questions
How accurate is a moving cost estimate?
An estimate built from distance and home size gets you to the right order of magnitude. A binding quote requires a survey of your actual inventory. Our ranges are intentionally wide enough to cover typical variation in shipment weight and access conditions.
Why is the result a range instead of one price?
Movers price the same route differently based on shipment weight, access conditions, and scheduling. A single number would imply a precision no estimator can deliver before seeing your inventory.
Do I have to give my contact details to see an estimate?
No. Every estimate on this site is visible before any form appears. Contact details are only needed if you want moving companies to send actual quotes.
What is not included in these estimates?
Auto transport, third-party services such as appliance disconnection, extended storage beyond the first month, full-value protection upgrades, and tips are excluded unless you switch them on in the calculator.
Does the month I move change the price?
Yes. Our model applies a seasonal adjustment only when you choose a month: about 12% above the off-peak baseline in June through August, about 5% in May and September, and a small premium in late December.
Can I enter a ZIP code instead of a city?
Yes. The calculator accepts a city name, a city and state, or a ZIP code, and matches it to the nearest supported metro. Pricing itself is always computed from city-center coordinates, never from the ZIP.
How is the distance between two cities calculated?
Distance is derived from published city-center coordinates and then adjusted by a documented circuity factor to approximate road miles, so it is an estimate rather than a routed driving distance.
