Privacy Policy

1.Introduction

Moving Cost Advisor (“Moving Cost Advisor,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the consumer information and moving cost estimation website at https://movingcostadvisor.com (the “Site”). We publish modeled moving cost ranges, comparison tools, and educational moving content, and we offer an optional form through which a user can request moving quotes.

This Privacy Policy describes:

• the categories of information we collect;
• how that information is used;
• how and to whom it may be disclosed;
• the choices available to you;
• how we approach data security and retention;
• privacy rights that may apply to you under U.S. state law;
• our use of cookies and similar technologies; and
• how to contact us about privacy matters.

By accessing or using the Site, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy. Where legally required, we rely on the consent or other legal basis described at the point of collection rather than on your use of the Site alone. If you do not agree with this Privacy Policy, please do not use the Site or submit information through it.

2.Information we collect

A. Information you provide directly

You can use the cost calculator without giving us contact details. If you choose to submit a quote request, we collect the information you enter, which currently may include:

• first name and last name;
• email address;
• phone number;
• origin city, state, and ZIP code (and the location text you typed);
• destination city, state, and ZIP code (and the location text you typed);
• home size;
• move timing (the month you indicate, where provided);
• selected moving services and moving preferences; and
• your consent record, including the consent text displayed to you and the date and time you submitted it.

B. Moving estimate and transaction-intent information

When a quote request is submitted, we store the estimate context that produced the numbers you saw, so that your request is not separated from its assumptions. This includes:

• the estimated route distance in miles;
• the modeled moving cost range shown to you;
• route and location information used in the calculation;
• home size assumptions and the options you selected;
• the internal version identifier of the pricing model that produced the range; and
• the page on the Site from which you submitted the request.

C. Information collected automatically

Like most websites, the Site and the infrastructure providers that serve it process standard technical request information, which may include your IP address, browser type and version, device and operating system information, referring URL, the pages you request, dates and times of access, and general interaction data such as errors encountered. This information may allow an approximate location to be inferred from an IP address.

We do not currently operate a third-party advertising network, advertising pixel, or cross-site tracking technology on the Site. If that changes, this Privacy Policy will be updated before or at the time such technology is introduced.

3.How we use information

We use the information described above for purposes including:

• generating and displaying moving cost estimates;
• responding to quote requests and other inquiries you send us;
• providing the services you request;
• facilitating your request to be connected with moving companies or moving service providers, where you have asked to be contacted;
• communicating with you about a move you have told us about;
• customer service and support;
• detecting, investigating, and preventing fraud, spam, and abuse of the Site;
• improving the accuracy of our calculator and the quality of our published content;
• measuring and improving website performance, reliability, and security;
• internal analytics and business operations;
• maintaining records, including consent records;
• complying with legal obligations and responding to legal process; and
• enforcing our Terms of Use and other agreements.

We operate a lead generation model. Information you submit through a quote request is used for commercial purposes connected with that request, as described in the next section.

4.Quote requests and lead disclosure

Moving Cost Advisor is an information and estimation service. We are not necessarily the moving company that will ultimately transport your household goods.

When you request moving quotes, submit your contact information, or otherwise ask to be contacted about moving services, we use the information you provide to facilitate that request. To do so, your move profile and contact information may be disclosed to:

• moving companies and household goods carriers;
• moving service providers, brokers, and marketplaces;
• service partners that match consumers with providers; and
• vendors that assist in delivering the service you requested.

Where you have consented and applicable law permits, those providers may contact you by phone, email, or text message about the move you described. We may be compensated in connection with delivering your request to a provider; see our advertising disclosure.

If you use the calculator and do not submit a quote request, we do not disclose your calculator inputs to moving providers.

5.Service providers

We use vendors that process information on our behalf and under our instructions, for purposes such as cloud hosting, database storage, email delivery, form processing, infrastructure, security, and support. Current providers include:

• Supabase, for database hosting and storage of submitted quote requests;
• Resend, for delivery of internal notification email;
• Lovable, for website hosting and application infrastructure.

These vendors are permitted to use the information only to provide services to us, and not for their own independent marketing purposes. Our vendor list may change over time.

6.Data sales and sharing

Different activities are treated differently under U.S. privacy laws:

• Service provider processing. Vendors that host, store, or transmit data on our behalf act as service providers or processors and are contractually limited to that role.
• Quote request fulfillment and lead distribution. When you ask to be connected with moving providers, we transmit your information to those providers so they can respond. Because we may receive compensation in connection with that transmission, this activity may be considered a “sale” of personal information under some U.S. state privacy laws, even though it is performed at your request.
• Advertising and analytics. We do not currently share personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising purposes.

Where applicable law gives you the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information, you may exercise that right by emailing info@movingcostadvisor.com with the subject line “Opt out.” Opting out will generally prevent us from delivering a pending quote request to moving providers, because that delivery is the service you requested.

7.Phone and email communications

If you provide contact information, you may receive communications about your requested moving estimate or quote request, follow-up regarding your move, service coordination, and customer support, as well as responses to messages you send us.

Where we send commercial email, we include an unsubscribe mechanism as required by applicable law, and you may also request removal by emailing info@movingcostadvisor.com. Transactional and service messages relating to a request you submitted may continue after you unsubscribe from commercial messages. Communications you receive directly from a moving provider are governed by that provider's own practices and opt-out mechanisms.

8.SMS and text messaging

Where a text messaging consent option is presented to you, the specific consent language shown at the point of collection governs what messages you agreed to receive, from whom, and for what purpose. Providing a phone number does not waive any legal right you have under applicable telephone or messaging laws.

A phone number you submit as part of a quote request may be provided to moving companies and service providers so they can respond to that request, as described above. Any SMS consent you give is limited to the parties and purposes identified in that consent language; we do not treat SMS consent as blanket permission for unrelated marketing, and we do not transfer SMS consent itself to third parties for unrelated marketing purposes.

Message and data rates may apply. Where a messaging program is offered, you may opt out by replying STOP to a message from that program or by emailing info@movingcostadvisor.com.

9.Cookies and tracking technologies

The Site relies on essential technologies required to serve pages, maintain application state, and protect against abuse. We also use functional browser storage where it is needed for features to work correctly.

We do not currently operate advertising cookies, cross-site tracking pixels, or a third-party behavioral advertising program on the Site, and we do not currently display a cookie consent banner. Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies and clear local storage through their settings; blocking essential technologies may cause parts of the Site to stop working. If we introduce analytics or advertising technologies in the future, we will update this section and provide any consent or opt-out mechanism required by applicable law.

10.Analytics

We do not currently run a third-party analytics package such as Google Analytics on the Site. We review aggregate server and infrastructure logs, and we may use search engine webmaster tools that report aggregate, non-identifying search performance data about our pages. If we add an analytics provider, this section will be updated to name it.

11.Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

Browsers may transmit “Do Not Track” signals or Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. There is no uniform industry standard for responding to Do Not Track, and the Site does not currently alter its behavior in response to a Do Not Track header.

We have not implemented automated processing of GPC signals at this time. Because we do not operate targeted advertising technologies on the Site, the activity GPC is designed to limit is largely not present here. Where applicable law requires us to honor an opt-out preference signal, we will do so; in the meantime, you may exercise opt-out rights directly by emailing info@movingcostadvisor.com.

12.U.S. state privacy rights

Residents of certain U.S. states may have rights under applicable state privacy laws. Where applicable to you and to Moving Cost Advisor, those rights may include:

• the right to know what personal information we process about you;
• the right to access or obtain a portable copy of that information;
• the right to correct inaccurate personal information;
• the right to request deletion of personal information;
• the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information;
• the right to opt out of targeted advertising, where applicable;
• the right to limit the use of sensitive personal information, where applicable;
• the right to appeal a denial of a request, where applicable; and
• the right not to receive discriminatory treatment for exercising these rights.

To submit a request, email info@movingcostadvisor.com and describe the right you wish to exercise. We may need to verify your identity before acting, typically by confirming information already associated with your submission, and we may decline requests that we cannot verify or that an exception permits us to decline. An authorized agent may submit a request on your behalf where applicable law allows, subject to proof of authorization.

13.California privacy disclosures

To the extent the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended, applies to Moving Cost Advisor and to you, the following disclosures supplement this Privacy Policy. We make no representation as to whether we meet the statute's applicability thresholds.

• Categories collected. Identifiers (name, email, phone, IP address); customer records information; commercial information relating to a requested service; internet or network activity information; and inferences limited to the move profile you provide. We do not seek to collect government identifiers, financial account numbers, or other sensitive personal information through the Site.
• Sources. Directly from you; automatically from your device and browser; and from our hosting and infrastructure providers.
• Business or commercial purposes. Those described in “How we use information” and “Quote requests and lead disclosure.”
• Categories of recipients. Service providers described above; moving companies and moving service providers where you request quotes; and legal or governmental recipients where required.
• Rights. Where applicable, rights to know, access, correct, delete, opt out of sale or sharing, and be free from discrimination for exercising those rights.

California requests may be submitted to info@movingcostadvisor.com. As described above, delivery of a quote request to moving providers may constitute a “sale” under California law, and you may opt out of that delivery.

14.Children's privacy

The Site is intended for adults arranging moving services. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly seek or collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Site, email info@movingcostadvisor.com with the details and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

15.Data security

We use commercially reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information we hold, including encrypted transport, access controls on our database, and restricted access to submitted records.

No method of transmission over the internet and no method of electronic storage is completely secure. We cannot and do not guarantee the security of information you transmit to us or that we store, and you provide information at your own risk.

16.Data retention

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including to provide the service you requested, to operate and improve our business, to detect and prevent fraud and abuse, to maintain records (including consent records), to comply with legal obligations, and to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims. Retention periods vary by record type and by the legal or operational reason for keeping the record. You may request deletion as described above.

17.International users

The Site is intended for users located in the United States, and information we collect is processed and stored in the United States. If you access the Site from outside the United States, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with local law, and you understand that United States law may not provide the same privacy protections as the laws of your jurisdiction. This Privacy Policy is not intended to describe compliance with the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation.

18.Legal disclosures

We may disclose information when we reasonably believe it is necessary to comply with applicable law or regulation; respond to subpoenas, court orders, or other legal process; protect the rights, property, or safety of Moving Cost Advisor, our users, or the public; investigate suspected fraud, security incidents, or violations of our Terms of Use; or enforce our agreements.

19.Business transfers

If Moving Cost Advisor is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, sale of assets, or similar transaction, information we hold may be transferred or disclosed as part of that transaction or its due diligence, subject to applicable law.

20.Third-party links

The Site may link to or reference third-party websites, including moving companies and government resources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. Review the privacy policy of any third-party site before providing information to it.

21.Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Where required by applicable law, we will provide additional notice of material changes. Your continued use of the Site after an update takes effect indicates that you are aware of the revised policy.
