The stability of that percentage is the useful finding. It happens because the step is fundamentally a weight step: 8,150 lbs to 11,250 lbs, an increase of 3,100 lbs, or 38%. Weight scales the line haul and most of the service labor, so the cost step tracks it closely and is almost independent of how far the shipment travels.

Why the step is 33% and not 38%
The weight increase is 38%, but the modeled price increase is about a third. The difference is the part of the move that does not scale with weight: the transport base, and the fixed portion of origin and destination service. Those components are the same whether the crew loads three bedrooms or four.
This dilution effect is the same mechanism that makes long-distance moves cheaper per mile than short ones. It also means the marginal cost of household size falls as the household grows — the studio-to-1-bedroom step is proportionally sharper than the 3-to-4 step.

Where a 4-bedroom move stops behaving like a bigger 3-bedroom
Above roughly 10,000 lbs the operational shape of the job changes. Our 4-bedroom profile assumes a 4-mover crew and 7–10 hours to load, against 3–4 movers and 6–8 hours at three bedrooms. That pushes some loads into a second day, and a second day is where scheduling, access, and accessorial exposure compound.
Larger households also carry more of the categories that get priced separately: gym equipment, workshop tools, safes, oversized art, outdoor furniture, and second refrigerators. None of that is in the modeled step above, and it is the most common reason a real 4-bedroom invoice exceeds a scaled-up 3-bedroom expectation.
The practical implication is that the modeled step understates the true difference for heavily equipped households, and is accurate for households that simply have one more furnished room.

- Specialty handling and crating scale faster than bedroom count.
- Larger shipments are more likely to require shuttle service at a constrained address.
Does the method choice change the step?
Not proportionally. Because both the container and full-service prices in our model scale from the same weight assumption, the percentage step between sizes holds. The absolute gap between the two methods grows, which matters: at four bedrooms the self-loading burden is real work at real risk.
Packing behaves the same way. Full packing adds roughly 16–17% of the transport total at both sizes in our model, so it does not change the relative step — it lifts both sides. The absolute difference, however, is larger at four bedrooms.
In short: if you are deciding between two houses of different size, use the percentage. If you are budgeting a specific move, use the dollars, and price your own corridor in the calculator rather than the benchmark.
Comparing quotes across the size boundary
Home-size labels are a planning shorthand, not a pricing unit. An interstate carrier prices the certified weight of what it loads, so a lightly furnished four-bedroom house and a densely furnished three-bedroom one can produce the same bill. The modeled step is a guide to scale, not a rule about your house.
This matters when quotes disagree. If two estimates for the same four-bedroom property differ by roughly the size of the modeled step, the likely explanation is a difference in assumed weight, not in rate. Ask both carriers for the estimated poundage and compare inventories before comparing prices.
The verification mechanism is the same at every size: the shipment is weighed before and after loading, you are entitled to the weight tickets, and you may request a reweigh. That is set out in how movers estimate shipment weight.
