The Cheapest Way to Move: What the Model Says, and What It Costs You

We priced three moving methods across every published corridor and every home size. The ranking never changed. What changes is how many hours of your own work the cheapest option is asking for — and that is the number this guide puts a price on.

The short answer

A rental truck is the cheapest way to move in our model — not usually, but on all 13,800 combinations of 2,300 published corridors and six home-size profiles. A container is second everywhere, running roughly a third below full-service. Full-service is the most expensive option on every corridor we publish. There is no distance and no household size at which that order flips on price alone.

That is a narrower finding than it sounds. Our model prices transport and hired labour. It does not price your time, and the two cheaper options are cheaper precisely because you supply the labour the full-service price buys. On a 1,000-mile 3-bedroom move the model puts the full-service premium over a container at about $1,950 for roughly 44 crew-hours of loading and unloading — around $44 an hour for your own work. Whether that is a good trade is a decision about your hours, not about the price.

Why the ranking never flips

Across every published corridor and home size in our model, a rental truck prices lowest 100% of the time, a container second, and a full-service carrier highest. The order holds at 250 miles and at 3,000, for a studio and for a five-bedroom house. Only the size of the gap moves.

The three methods are not three different pricing systems in our model. They are the same shipment priced with progressively less hired labour attached: a container removes the loading and unloading crews, a rental truck removes the carrier as well. Because each method takes a slice out of the same base rather than pricing on a different rate structure, one cannot overtake another as distance or weight grows.

That is a property of this model, not a law of the moving industry. Real quotes carry things our model does not attempt: a truck's one-way drop fee on an unpopular lane, a container provider's regional pricing, a carrier discount on a corridor it already runs. Any of those can compress a gap in a specific case.

What the model can tell you reliably is the shape of the trade rather than the winner. The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive method is stable at roughly 55 to 60% of the full-service price across the whole corpus, which means the decision is worth the same proportion of your budget whatever the move looks like.

What the cheaper price is actually buying you out of

The container and rental-truck figures are lower because you supply the labour. Our home-size profiles put a 3-bedroom load at roughly 44 crew-hours of loading and unloading, and a 1,000-mile drive at about 18 hours behind the wheel. Neither is priced in any of the three columns.

The tables above add two columns the usual method comparison leaves out. The handling column converts our published home-size profile — crew size and load hours, with unloading assumed at 80% of loading — into the crew-hours a self-loaded move hands to you. The break-even column divides the price gap by those hours.

Read as a wage, the numbers are uncomfortable. Choosing a container over full-service on a 1,000-mile 3-bedroom move pays you about $44 an hour for the work. Doing the same on a five-bedroom house pays about $22 an hour, because the hours grow faster than the gap does. The cheapest option gets less rewarding, per hour, as the household gets bigger.

This is the one place where a real threshold exists in our numbers, and it is not a distance. It is what an hour of your own time is worth to you. Above the break-even figure for your move, the more expensive method is the cheaper decision on your own terms.

  • Handling hours are crew-hours, not calendar hours: 44 crew-hours is two people for most of a weekend.
  • Driving hours cover the one-way drive at a modeled 55 mph and exclude fuel, tolls, lodging and the return trip.
  • Hiring loading help at both ends puts labour back into the container price without restoring carrier liability.

Where distance changes the answer, and where it does not

Distance does not change which method is cheapest in our model, but it changes what you are being paid to do. The 3-bedroom truck-versus-container gap is worth about $100 an hour of driving at 500 miles and about $46 an hour at 3,000, because the drive grows faster than the saving.

The distance table shows the effect clearly. A rental truck saves about $900 against a container on a 500-mile 3-bedroom move, against roughly nine hours of driving. At 3,000 miles it saves about $2,550 against 55 hours. The absolute saving nearly triples; the hourly value of taking it more than halves.

This is why cross-country advice that stops at 'drive it yourself' is incomplete. On a short interstate hop the truck is cheap and the drive is a day. On a coast-to-coast corridor the same decision is a week of driving, two or three nights of lodging, and fuel our model does not price at all — and the hourly return on it has collapsed.

Our corridor set is weighted towards long moves: about 27% of published corridors are under 1,000 miles and roughly 33% are over 2,000. For most of the routes we publish, the driving decision matters more than the loading decision.

How to use these thresholds on your own move

Price your corridor first, then read the two break-even columns for your home size and distance. If an hour of your time is worth more than the figure shown, the more expensive method is cheaper for you. That is the whole decision, and it does not need a quote to make.

Start with the corridor rather than a benchmark row. Origin and destination labour markets move the full-service and container figures but barely touch a truck rental, so the gap on an expensive corridor is wider than the national baseline rows suggest. The calculator prices all three methods on your actual route.

Then apply the constraints that override price entirely. A container needs somewhere legal to sit for a day or more at both addresses. A rental truck needs someone willing and able to drive it, which is a real constraint on a long corridor and on a household without a second driver. If either fails, the cheaper option is not available at any price.

Finally, treat the modeled gap as a planning figure rather than a saving you have banked. Two written estimates on your own corridor are the only numbers that commit anyone to anything, and the full-service versus container guide sets out what each of those prices includes before you compare them.

What this analysis deliberately leaves out

Fuel, tolls, lodging and the mileage charge on a one-way truck rental are not in the rental-truck column. Neither is the cost of damage caused by inexperienced loading, which is the risk a self-loaded move genuinely carries and the reason the carrier liability framework exists on the full-service side.

Our figures also assume a single load and a single delivery. Storage days, a shuttle at either end, a long carry, stair carries and specialty crating are quoted from a carrier's own tariff and appear in none of the three columns. On a difficult address those can be worth more than the method decision itself.

Is a moving container ever cheaper than a rental truck?

How much do you actually save by moving yourself?

In our model the widest gap — full-service against a rental truck — is roughly 55 to 60% of the full-service price, so about $3,300 on a 1,000-mile 3-bedroom move. That figure excludes fuel, tolls, lodging and every hour of your own labour.

Does the cheapest method change on a cross-country move?
